When permits are often needed

Typical renovation triggers

  • Moving or removing load-bearing walls
  • Changing plumbing or electrical systems in a substantial way
  • New openings for windows/doors, especially egress
  • Basement suites / secondary suites and related fire/egress upgrades
  • Structural changes, additions, or exterior alterations regulated by your city

Cosmetic work alone (paint, flooring, some cabinet replacements) may not need a permit — but “may” is not a guarantee. Confirm with your municipality.
